Olaf Wieghorst (1899-1988) was born in Viborg, Denmark, son of a Danish photographer and film animator. He was known as the "Dean of Western Artists" and placed in a class with Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. Olaf was at one time an acrobat, trick rider, cavalryman, cowboy, mounted policeman, and one of the greatest western artists ever.

The El Dorado movie featured Olaf's paintings as backdrops during the credits. Many people have been introduced to Olaf Wieghorst's art by these paintings. I have been asked numerous times about the paintings and if prints are available. There were fifteen painting displayed and prints were published for seven of the painting.

He was also known as a portrait artist - of horses! Believing that horses were as unique as people, he sought to capture the individuality of each horse he put to canvas. Some of the more famous horses captured in Olaf's paintings were Gene Autry's Champion, Tom Morgan's stallion and Roy Rogers' Trigger.

Olaf began pencil sketching early. At eight years old he drew on every piece of paper he could find. Horses were his favorite subject. Olaf's father - an artist in his own right - encouraged his son. And young Olaf took up a paint brush for a time. He sold his first painting - a reproduction from a postcard - at age twelve.

At the age of 19, Wieghorst immigrated to the U.S., where he joined the 5th Cavalry, patrolling the U.S.-Mexican border. Following his service, he floated around the Southwest, working at times.
